What is Econat2000?

ECONAT2000 has developped to promote the exchange of best practice and experience for implementing Natura2000 and its interface with economic developments.

Econat2000 aim is to enhance trans-boundary and cross sector cooperation by exploring in greater detail: How the ‘legal’, ‘ecological’ and “economic” concepts in the Habitats and Birds Directives are applied in practical cases?

Who is Econat2000?

The network members are 4 organisations/institutions drawned from both the nature conservation and economic development sectors.
 

  • Rijkswaterstaat , part of the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management,
  • Natural England, Nature Conservation Agency in England,
  • Niedersächsischer Landesbetrieb für Wasserwirtschaft, Küsten- und Naturschutz , NLWKN, part of Ministry of Environment of Lower Saxony,
  • ATEN, Umbrella organisation grouping together protected area management bodies, mandated by the French Ministry in charge of Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development and Land use planning.

Econat2000 peer exchanges

A programme of cross national peer to peer exchanges , on learning from case studies, has been organised in 4 countries in 2008 and 2009.
With particular emphasis, in 2009 on examining of cases regarding :

  • Management planning
  • Linear / transport infrastructure
  • Legal aspects of species protection
  • Natura 2000 Protected marine areas
  • Flood Risk Management & Natura 2000 - working with local communities
  • Estuaries
Econat2000 seminar

The SEMINAR 09 aim was to :

  • Bring together the learning derived from the 6 Peer to Peer exchanges
  • Broaden expertise on key subjects such as linear and transport infrastructures
  • Explore new topics for further Econat2000 exchanges and new links with other European networks.

The seminar consisted of two days with presentations covering peer exchange subject areas, plus a site visit with relevant stakeholders in the Regional Natural Park of Lorraine.
